PENSACOLA BEACH — Pensacola Beach was hit hard Friday night with destructive wind and rain from Hurricane Isaias. The damage to one condo complex on Pensacola Beach may prompt a lawsuit.

Residents at the Portofino Island Resort say they were terrified as their condos got destroyed. WEAR News took a tour of some of the condominiums hit the hardest.

Condo owners in towers four and five say their homes are destroyed. Dozens of windows were blown in, spraying glass shards everywhere.

"And it was just horrifying," said condo owner Trish Welch.

Ron Renner, who lives in tower four, says he hunkered down in his master bedroom with his wife and dog until they heard their floor-to-ceiling windows start to rattle. They ran to their guest bedroom to hide.

"So I said, 'Let's get a mattress, get underneath it, protect from debris, and just stay there until things calm down,'" Renner said.

Less than two minutes later, a loud pop was heard.

"Almost like a very loud firecracker," said Renner.

His master bedroom windows blew in, along with those in his living room. Welch also lives in tower four.

"And things were going on pretty normally until about eight or so, I think," Welch said.

"Now, I don't remember. It was kind of blurry exactly what time, but that's when I started noticing things were not right. The noise was changing. My glass was moving, vibrating. My front doors were heaving in and out. It was moving quickly and getting more and more terrifying."

She says she thanks God her condo remained unscathed, but Friday night took a toll on her regardless.

Condo owners at the Portofino say they were fine staying put during Hurricane Sally in 2020, which was also a category 2 storm. That's why they assumed Hurricane Isaias wouldn't make much of an impact.
