The Hillcrest golf course would be transformed into a 645-home gated community
under a plan coming before commissioners Wednesday.
Developers have had their sights on the
golf course for at least a decade. But a previous plan to build
two condo towers on the greens fizzled out with the economic
downturn.
Now a different developer plans to build 494 homes on the
18-hole golf course and 151 homes on the nine-hole executive
course.
City commissioners are expected to okay the $31.5 million
project Wednesday, but it would still need approvals from the
county and state.
Commissioner Dick Blattner said the current owners of the golf
course plan to sell the property whether the project is approved
or not.
"The golf course is going to disappear regardless," he said.
"It's doing very well, but the current owners have said they are
going to close it." |

Blattner said it's a sign of the times.
"Golf is declining in popularity," he said. "And the property is too valuable to
developers to not develop it. You see this happening all over."
If the project wins approval, the developer plans to add lakes, ponds and
walking paths.
Blattner said the new development will likely boost property values in
surrounding neighborhoods, but will also add to congestion on the roads. |
