Campaign
to Protect Condo Owners in Florida Launched Today…
www.CleanCondos.org
Urges Condo Owners and Legislators
to Support Bill Aimed at Curbing Condo Mismanagement |
Miami, Monday, March
29, 2004 The Clean Condos campaign was launched today to mobilize
support for legislation being considered by the Florida Legislature that
would provide new protections for condo owners plagued by unscrupulous
property management companies and renegade condo boards.
The campaign’s website,
www.CleanCondos.org,
enables owners to contact their legislators in Tallahassee directly and
urge them to support HB1223 and SB2498, the so-called Condo Owners Bill
of Rights.
The legislation, sponsored
by Rep. Julio Robaina in the Florida House of Representatives and Sen.
Rudy Garcia in the Senate, arose in response to the growing number of complaints
from condo owners about mismanagement of their buildings by condo boards
and management companies.
The bills call for
mechanisms to hold property managers and condo board members accountable
and to ensure transparency in the process of awarding contracts to maintain
condos. The bills would:
-
Create an ombudsman office
for oversight and dispute resolution
-
Force board members to
disclose conflicts of interest with potential contractors
-
Provide condo buyers with
"buyer beware" information
-
Establish guidelines for
special assessments
CleanCondos.org partners
in the effort to protect condo owners include:
Cyber Citizens for Justice (CCFJ), League of United Latin American
Citizens (LULAC), Concerned Homeowners in Partnership (CHIP), Property
Owners Association in the Villages (POA), Fair Housing Center of Palm Beach
(FHCPB), Consumer Advocacy Network (CAN), Property Rights Florida (PRF) |
CleanCondos.org is
part of a public information campaign by the Service Employees International
Union (SEIU), Local 11. SEIU, with 1.6 million members, is the nation's
largest union of workers. More than 200,000 SEIU members clean, secure,
and maintain condos, apartments, and other commercial and residential facilities.
