The City of Marco Island Fire Rescue and Police Department are investigating an explosion in the lobby area of the Monterrey Condominium.

They said an unknown electrical malfunction on Monday in the building’s main electrical system caused an explosion that damaged the lobby and elevators.

According to Marco Island Fire Rescue, the building suffered significant damage to the lobby area, and 55 residents were evacuated.

There were no injuries reported.

The Marco Island Fire Rescue Chief, during a 10 a.m. press conference, said that dispatchers were informed of the explosion at 2:55 a.m.

The Red Cross was called to help aid residents with temporary housing opportunities.

The state fire marshall is working alongside the Marco Island Fire Rescue and Police to investigate the cause of the explosion.

Foul play is not suspected.

There are no elevators currently working in the building, and everyone was evacuated via the stairs.

The estimated repair time for the condominium lobby could take several weeks, according to the building manager.
