ORANGE COUNTY – Orange County commissioners are expected to vote Tuesday on whether to pursue legal action involving the Tymber Skan condominium complex.

 

The county is seeking permission to go to court to end the property’s legal status as a condominium, a step that could clear the way for the buildings to be demolished. One Tymber Skan resident, who asked not to be identified, said she wants the county to demolish the buildings as soon as possible. She said years of crime, safety concerns and poor living conditions have made the property difficult to call home. “My second night here, someone shot through my side window,” the resident said. “Eight bullets with me and my children inside.” She also described a police raid at her apartment about two years ago and said she has dealt with drug activity and a squatter in a neighboring unit.

 

“Code enforcement says it’s a police matter. Police say it’s a code enforcement matter,” she said. “So everybody’s pointing the finger at each other.”

 

The resident said her desire to see the complex demolished is also personal. She recalled caring for her father while he lived at Tymber Skan and described unsanitary conditions inside the unit.

“My dad could not move. He had bedsores, so I had to open up the windows,” she said. “None of the windows had screens in them. Flies landed on my dad’s sores and embedded maggots.”

The resident said she no longer feels safe living at Tymber Skan.

Her main concern, she said, is whether the county will help residents relocate if the complex is demolished.

“I’m not the only one who’s ready to go,” she said. “We’re just worried about if the county is really going to help us relocate.”

Commissioners are scheduled to discuss the matter at their 9 a.m. meeting Tuesday. The county’s proposed action and any relocation assistance could become clearer during the meeting.
