Setting the standard for efficiency, achievement, and community engagement,
while embodying a dynamic blend of professional acumen and altruism Jane Muir is
a leader in the Miami legal landscape. The founder of J. Muir & Associates,
established in 2018, Jane has dedicated over 15 years to building a business law
practice, an impressive team, and a sterling reputation for commitment to her
clients and community.
Firm Philosophy
Driven by a genuine desire to assist clients to succeed in
spite of challenges, the firm J. Muir & Associates’ practice
is rooted in providing effective legal support while
investing in the community.
Most recently, aside from helping her clients manage their
own operations, Jane has been appointed or served as a
receiver for several embattled companies in hospitality,
automotive, and lending, across Florida. She also assisted
an attorney who was sued by his former law firm through
arbitration, defeating claims that the attorney usurped
corporate opportunities and recovering legal costs after
trial.
Partner Victoria Morton, an experienced community
association manager, homeowners’ association board member,
and association general counsel, applies her expertise to
supporting various non-profit associations in their
operations.
The administrative team, led by office manager Devon
Schweidel, leverages technology to support the firm’s
attorneys so that the firm has adequate capacity to handle
significant volume and will be well-prepared for the
rigorous new civil procedures that went into effect January
1, 2025. |

The firm’s philosophy emphasizes applying the latest technology to enable superb
client service – and giving back to the community through service.
Education and Professional Background
Jane’s legal career began at the University of Miami’s School of Law, where she
was drawn to oral advocacy. During her study, she competed in six intramurals,
four state, four regional and two national competitions in negotiation, mock
trial and appellate advocacy. She won and earned “Best Brief” in Miami Law’s
Advanced Moot Court competition and in the prestigious Litigation Skills program
received the John F. Evans Memorial Scholarship for exceptional performance.
For her dedication to advocacy and performance in competition, she was inducted
into the Order of Barristers, a national honor society recognizing the nation’s
best student advocates.
Graduating after the 2008 subprime mortgage crisis, fate led her to establish a
firm. “In my first month in business,” Jane recounts, “our gross revenue was
$350 which I used to pay for a $100 virtual office and business cards. I started
out by attending community events and that was where I found clients.”
At first, she handled a peculiar assortment of cases for friends who had nowhere
else to turn, noting, “I even recovered a dog from an ex-boyfriend, for
example!” Novel situations became an area of expertise for her, and clients who
had good results became her biggest fans and referral sources.
As the practice grew, Jane gravitated towards representing smart,
detail-oriented, entrepreneurs seeking to achieve great results efficiently –
and the firm became focused on business law, handling contracts and litigation
as outside general counsel to businesses.
Leadership and Awards
A self-described “joiner,” Jane’s community service has led to her election to
various executive and leadership roles. “I showed up for a luncheon for the
Coral Gables Bar Association, and it turned out the website was out of date.
When I finally made it on the right day, I volunteered to fix the website, so
they invited me to sit on the board.” She quickly was elevated to Treasurer,
President-Elect, and President for 2012-2013.
Jane also volunteered for the Miami Dade Bar, formerly known as the Dade County
Bar Association, at first as a writer and editor for the Bulletin. She ran for
the board of directors in 2010, and supported numerous initiatives including
another website redesign, implementing financial controls and employee
handbooks, contracting a capable executive director while serving as Treasurer,
Secretary, Vice President, President-Elect and President for 2020-2021.
Jane’s tenure as President of the Miami-Dade Bar Association was marked by
significant achievements, including initiating renovation of the association’s
headquarters as a co-working space for attorneys and the successful rebranding
of the association with a new name and logo.
As a result of these contributions, Jane and her firm have been recognized
widely. She was honored by the Florida Bar with their 2015 Lynn Futch Most
Productive Young Lawyer Award, by the Miami Dade Bar with their 2023 Johnnie M.
Ridgely President’s Award, and by the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce with its
2020 Businesswoman of the Year.
The firm has grown to a team of 12 with four attorneys and has been recognized
as a Law Firm Champion of Women by the Miami-Dade Chapter of the Florida
Association for Women Lawyers and was the 2023 Diamond Award Winner from the
Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce.
