Homeowners' associations are a hot topic in Florida, with many residents holding strong opinions about them. A state lawmaker is pushing for a significant change that could affect these associations across the state.

Rep. Juan Carlos Porras of Miami is leading the charge to bring more transparency and accountability to HOAs. In the last legislative session, he introduced a bill requiring HOAs to disclose additional costs upfront, such as clubhouse or golf course fees. The bill did not pass, but Porras remains determined.

"There are people that are struggling all over our state right now for the lack of accountability, the lack of transparency in our residents that live in homeowner associations," said Porras.

Porras is now considering a more drastic measure—eliminating HOAs altogether. This proposal could have a significant impact, as nearly 9.5 million people in Florida live in HOA communities.

Homeowners have mixed feelings about the associations. Some residents see both advantages and disadvantages to living in an HOA community. "We're all in different financial situations, but we all have to find some way to bear it," said one homeowner. Another noted, "You're living in a community, you're going to have laws and rules you have to abide."

Others are less enthusiastic, with some expressing concerns that "the HOA fees are not going to our benefit."

WINK News reporter Haley Jacobs engaged the community by posting on the WINK News Facebook page to gather opinions. The responses further highlighted the divide among residents.

Porras’ push for change is ongoing, and his office has yet to comment on further developments. As the conversation continues, the future of HOAs in Florida remains uncertain.
