Thousands
of America's elderly are dying each year in the nation's nursing homes
for lack of good care. According to consumer watchdogs quite a lot of these
deaths could be prevented. Fatal neglect seems to be a major issue in this
ongoing debate.
Despite many recent reforms it seems that the nursing home industry and the trial lawyers are still fighting their financial battles on the back of the consumers, much to the disadvantage of our elderly in need of care and help. The battle is waged with big money at stake, which often leaves consumer advocates on the side-line. The almighty dollar-sign is blinding many of the parties making profits from nursing homes, but obviously as well many legislators. Recent published reports have clearly shown that serious problems still exist in the nursing home industry and more changes are desperately needed for the welfare of our elderly. And it seems that the battle between the feuding parties will go on in the upcoming legislative sessions, on federal and state levels. Especially in Florida, with the government trying to entice even more retirees to move to the Sunshine State, our legislators should definitely see to it that our elders are well protected and cared for, if the time comes for them to depend on the help , care and support of this industry.
